Civil Society Calls for Sanctions Against Spoilers of Tumain Peace Talks in South Sudan
In a fervent plea for accountability, Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has condemned the actions of those undermining the Tumain peace talks, attributing them as the main profiteers behind South Sudan’s political instability and economic crisis.
Yakani expressed deep concern over the behavior of these spoilers, highlighting their disregard for the well-being of the citizens and their self-serving approach to governance. He emphasized, “Spoilers of Tumaini Peace Talks are the real profiteers of our citizens’ suffering since 2018.”
The CEPO director called for stern measures to be taken against these individuals, advocating for sanctions similar to those imposed by the US government, including visa restrictions and other direct punitive actions at a personal level. Yakani stressed the urgent need to hold the spoilers accountable for their actions, which he believes are hindering genuine political transitional processes in the country.
Furthermore, Yakani drew attention to the fact that many of these spoilers have their families residing outside South Sudan and have allegedly benefitted from looting the nation’s wealth, exacerbating the already challenging socio-economic conditions faced by the populace. He urged President (insert President’s name) to take decisive action against these spoilers to prevent further harm to the citizens.
CEPO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the success of the Tumain Peace Talks, emphasizing that the initiative aims to complement, not undermine, existing peace agreements in South Sudan. The organization pledged to actively engage in regional advocacy efforts to promote inclusive governance and a genuine transition from violence to peace.
As the nation grapples with ongoing challenges, the spotlight is now on the government to address the concerns raised by civil society and take decisive steps to curb the influence of spoilers jeopardizing the prospects of lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
