Football Match Postponed Due to Fan Violence at Wau Stadium
In a recent turn of events at Wau Stadium, a National League match between Mariekh FC Bentiu and Salaam Aweil FC was abruptly postponed due to violent clashes among fans. The disturbance erupted following Mariekh FC Bentiu’s two-goal lead, resulting in chaos despite police intervention.
According to a witness at the scene, “The situation quickly escalated, and even police presence couldn’t contain the escalating violence among fans.”
Despite efforts by law enforcement to disperse the crowd with gunfire, the situation continued to spiral out of control, leading to the suspension of the match. Spectators fled for safety as the stadium emptied in response to the unrest.
In light of the incident, the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) Organizing Committee swiftly addressed the matter. In an emergency meeting held on May 20, 2024, the committee reviewed the reports from the match referee and commissioner, ultimately concluding that fans of Salaam FC Aweil had violated regulations.
As a result of the committee’s ruling, Salaam FC Aweil has been declared to have forfeited the match 2-0, consequently awarding El Merriekh FC Bentiu the victory. Additionally, Salaam FC Aweil has received a stern warning emphasizing the importance of upholding discipline within the football community.
The SSFA administration emphasized the significance of adhering to regulations and maintaining order within football matches to ensure the safety and integrity of all involved.
