In a groundbreaking move towards social progress and gender equality, South Sudan is emphasizing the significance of sexual and reproductive health as an essential human right. The country is striving to ensure that women’s sexual and reproductive health rights are protected, acknowledging the interconnectedness with various fundamental human rights.

The right to sexual and reproductive health is intricately linked to crucial rights such as the right to life, freedom from suffering, well-being, confidentiality, education, and the prevention of discrimination. This right is enshrined in global and regional human rights instruments, as well as national regulations and policies. Despite these protections, violations of women’s sexual and reproductive health rights persist, often rooted in deep-seated beliefs and societal norms surrounding women’s sexuality.

Recognizing the fundamental importance of sexual and reproductive health, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have highlighted these rights as essential not only for health but also for gender equality and broader societal development. Access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services is vital for achieving universal health coverage, promoting gender equality, and empowering individuals.

Tragically, abuses of women’s sexual and reproductive health rights are prevalent, taking various forms such as forced sterilization, denial of essential services, forced abortion, poor-quality SRHR services, early and forced marriage, and more. These violations have severe consequences on women’s health and subject them to discrimination and human rights abuses.

In response to these challenges, the Jamnel Care Organization (JCO) is actively raising awareness on sexual and reproductive health rights through various media platforms and community engagements. From talk shows to paralegal training, JCO is dedicated to empowering communities to understand and advocate for the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls in South Sudan.

Through these efforts, South Sudan is taking a significant step towards ensuring that sexual and reproductive health is recognized and respected as a fundamental human right for all its citizens.
