South Sudan at Risk of Political Instability: CEPO Urges Leaders to Prioritize Peace over Personal Gain

Yakani warns that the country is in danger of seeing “peace in pieces” due to the actions of political elites who prioritize personal gain over the well-being of the nation.
According to Yakani, the root cause of political instability in South Sudan lies in the selfish ambitions of a few elite individuals who are more interested in wielding power for their own benefit rather than serving the needs of the people. This trend has led to a culture of corruption, incompetence, and disregard for the rule of law since the outbreak of conflict in 2013.
CEPO is calling on current political leaders in South Sudan to take immediate action to promote genuine peace and stability in the country within the next two years or by the end of 2027. The organization emphasizes the urgent need for a shift in political attitudes towards selflessness and a genuine commitment to the best interests of citizens.
