Concerns are mounting over governance in Western Equatoria State (WES) under President Salva Kiir’s leadership. Despite compelling evidence implicating the IO governor in WES in a counterfeiting operation involving US dollars, no steps have been taken to remove or arrest the governor. This lack of action is raising serious questions about the enforcement of laws and accountability within the region.

Azande Prince Justin John, a former member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPPL-IO), stressed the urgent need to tackle corruption and organized crime. “Addressing corruption and organized criminal activities is imperative for the nation’s stability,” he stated. Prince John highlighted that residents who voice concerns about illegal activities in WES often find these issues politicized and misrepresented as tribal conflicts, especially between the Zande and Balanda communities.

He emphasized that while tribalism can obscure the truth, these communities have coexisted peacefully for generations, and the recent tensions are being deliberately fostered by certain leaders to sow division and solidify loyalty within their factions.

Similar governance issues plague Unity State, where longstanding enmities within the Nuer community persist despite their shared ethnicity.

In WES, the current leadership situation is prompting scrutiny of the qualifications and selection processes for leaders who are supposed to represent and serve their communities.

Evidence presented suggests that elements within the IO leadership are operating in a manner reminiscent of organized crime. This situation casts a shadow over Dr. Riek Machar’s role and challenges President Kiir’s administration to uphold justice and integrity in governance.

“The current scenario in Western Equatoria State is deeply troubling and highlights the need for transparent and accountable governance, it’s crucial for President Kiir to demonstrate his commitment to justice by addressing these serious allegations and ensuring that the law is applied equally to all” Prince John remarked.

As the region grapples with these issues, the call for stronger governance and accountability grows louder, with residents and leaders alike urging for immediate action to restore trust and stability in Western Equatoria State.
