Accreditations of Patrick and Abud Confiscated, Authorities Issue Clarification

In an official media statement signed by Majak Daniel Kuany Alier, UJOSS Secretary-General share with Journalists stated that.
The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) was shocked by the unfortunate confiscation of its president’s accreditation card while he was on his journalistic duties.
On Monday, January 15th 2024, Oyet Patrick Charles and Abud Samuel accreditations were confiscated by the element of the National Security Service –Political Affairs Division.
Abud Samuel, who is a professional cameraman, was capturing Oyet doing a peace to camera (PTC) as a standard protocol practice for television reporters.
On Tuesday, January 16th 2024, UJOSS received the two accreditation cards that were confiscated after a meeting with the Director of the Directorate of Political Affairs division.
Although the incident was unpleasant and uncalled for, UJOSS were pleased with how the Director apologized and expressed regret for the ignorance of his subordinates.
“We, as a union, saw this incident as a violation of media freedom as stipulated in the media laws and the transitional constitution of South Sudan 2011 as amended,” Statement read.
As the country is anticipating the first-ever general election, it is important for the relevant security sector to comprehend the work of journalists and media.
“We urge anybody and particularly the security personnel who might have any grievances against journalists or media workers to follow or adhere to Media Authority Act, 2013.”
To foster a pluralistic, independent, and vibrant media in South Sudan, UJOSS is urging the Media Authority to take lead and educate government security agencies on their role.
