Azande Community in South Sudan Embraces Democracy with Peaceful Election of New Leader

In a significant display of democratic values, the Azande community successfully conducted a peaceful election to choose their new leader, marking a promising chapter in local governance. The event, organized by the Azande Community Organization (ACO), took place at the Nazareth ECSS Church in the capital, Juba.
Andrea Miniala Babonguma emerged as the new leader, commanding a decisive victory with 270 votes against his challenger Charles Kisanga, who received 107 votes from a total of 392 ballots cast. Babonguma succeeds Clement Philimona Baime, who devoted ten years of service to the community.
The newly elected executive committee embodies a spirit of inclusivity and continuity, as Hon. Modi Mbaraza was elected unopposed to serve as deputy chairperson, and Mr. Gimigu Alfred stepped into the role of secretary.
This election was not just a transition of power; it highlighted the community’s dedication to unity and forward progress. In her remarks, Rt. Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly, praised the outgoing leadership for promoting harmony and urged the incoming leaders to focus on unity, hard work, and cooperation as the foundations for sustainable development.
Elder Angelo Beda echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of patience and dedication in overcoming challenges and striving for meaningful advancements.
Religious leaders also played a key role in the proceedings, with Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio delivering the closing remarks. He blessed the event with a call for love and unity, emphasizing the importance of faith in the community’s endeavors and its role in fostering strong relationships and productivity.
The election attracted a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including elders, government representatives, and church leaders, all coming together with a shared vision for a prosperous and cohesive Azande community in Juba.
