Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has issued a compelling plea to the leaders of Sudan’s warring factions to prioritize genuine and inclusive peace mediation without any preconditions. Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, condemned the current trend of Sudanese leaders avoiding peace talks or imposing preconditions on negotiation processes, emphasizing the urgent need to halt such practices immediately.

The escalating loss of human lives and widespread destruction of properties across Sudan due to ongoing conflicts between the warring parties is deemed unacceptable by Mr. Yakani. He stressed that unless these leaders demonstrate a genuine concern for the well-being of innocent citizens and their assets, the devastating impact of the conflicts will continue unabated. Mr. Yakani highlighted the detrimental effects of the political-military culture of provocation, urging the international community to intervene and prevent its perpetuation.

In a bold move, CEPO proposed the implementation of individual sanctions, such as visa restrictions, on Sudanese warring parties’ leaders who obstruct or impose preconditions on peace mediation efforts. Regional bodies like the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) are urged to consider adopting similar measures against leaders who refuse to engage in peace negotiations without preconditions.

Mr. Yakani underscored the growing concern that Sudan and other warring parties across Africa are displaying a lack of willingness to compromise for peace mediation, necessitating immediate action to address this worrisome trend. CEPO reiterated its call for Sudanese warring parties leaders to embrace peace talks unconditionally, emphasizing the importance of fostering a conducive environment for peaceful resolution without impediments.

Sudan continues to grapple with protracted conflicts, CEPO’s impassioned appeal serves as a critical reminder of the pressing need for all parties involved to prioritize peace, cooperation, and dialogue in the pursuit of lasting stability and prosperity for the nation.
