CEPO Executive Director Calls for Dialogue Amid Leadership Tensions in Western Bahr-El-Ghazal
Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has issued a heartfelt appeal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA IO) following reports of tensions surrounding the recent appointment of Emmanuel Primo Okello as the new governor of Western Bahr-el-Ghazal State.
In a statement released today, Mr. Yakani expressed his concern over the SPLA IO leadership’s rejection of Okello’s appointment, which came at the expense of former governor Honorable Sarah Kleto. “We are a bit disturbed and we are shocked when we see media articles coming out that the leadership of SPLA IO in Western Bahr-el-Ghazal State have rejected the appointment,” Yakani commented. “The leadership expressed that they were not consulted, which is a genuine concern. However, we must remember that any grievances should be addressed through dialogue, not violence.”
Mr. Yakani emphasized the importance of maintaining the relative peace and stability that has been achieved in Western Bahr-el-Ghazal State in recent months. “Let the shift of power not trigger violence. We must appeal to the leaders of SPLA IO to embrace dialogue and reach out to their leadership,” he urged. “Public safety and security must remain a priority.”
As tensions simmer, the potential for unrest remains a serious concern for local communities. “I would like to appeal to the leaders of SPLA IO in Western Bahr-el-Ghazal State to please remain calm and focus on dialogue rather than threats,” he stated firmly.
In a separate development, Mr. Yakani shifted his focus to the Tumaini peace talks, emphasizing the responsibility of involved parties to offer hope to the citizens of South Sudan. He urged the government delegation to promptly report to Nairobi for the next round of negotiations, under the mediation of Kenya and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
“Let’s take that responsibility,” Yakani said. “Public statements indicating frustration from parties involved can create a sense of hopelessness among citizens. The Tumaini peace talks present a vital opportunity for a genuine political transition and we must not squander it.”
He added that a successful political transition will pave the way for credible elections and lasting peace. “We need to create a conducive environment for political transitions from violence to peace through peaceful and credible elections,” he concluded.
Mr. Yakani’s appeals come at a crucial time, as the juxtaposition of leadership changes and ongoing peace negotiations continues to shape the socio-political landscape of South Sudan. The outcome of these discussions may significantly influence the future stability and governance of the region.
