Civil Society Leader Calls for Denouncement of Political Allegiance in Electoral Commission
In a recent statement, Bol Deng Bol, Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan and Chairperson of Jonglei Civil Society Network, has urged members of the National Elections Commission to denounce their political allegiances. This call comes after concerns were raised regarding the composition of the Commission and its adherence to the National Elections Act.
Speaking about the ongoing consultations being conducted by the Commission in various regions, Bol highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of independence, impartiality, and nonpartisanship in the electoral process. He pointed out specific violations of the National Elections Act, including the appointment of Commissioners from political parties without vetting by the Transitional National Legislative Assembly.
“We expressed our concerns regarding the process leading to the appointment of the NEC Members and the Commission’s composition by the National Elections Act,” said Bol during a consultative forum in Bor town.
“Members of the Commission must denounce political allegiance to ensure credibility, impartiality, independence, and trust in this electioneering period.”
The call for denouncement of political allegiance aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure fair and transparent elections in South Sudan. Citizens are encouraged to adhere to the law and support efforts to maintain a democratic and inclusive electoral system.
