Civil Society Urges Action on Low-Hanging Fruits as South Sudan Extends Transitional Period

In a media statement, Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), key issues regarding the extension of South Sudan’s transitional period were brought to light. With the signing of Constitutional Amendment Bill 1220, the transitional period has been extended for two more years, prompting calls for immediate action on crucial matters within the country.

Mr. Yakani emphasized the need for leaders to focus on “low-hanging fruits” that can be addressed within the remaining six months of the old extended transitional period. These include essential tasks such as repealing the National Election Act to ensure free and fair elections, advancing the unification of forces, establishing transitional justice institutions, and fostering open civic and political spaces for civil society engagement.

Speaking on the urgency of these actions, Mr. Yakani stated, “We need to see tangible progress within the existing timeframe to pave the way for a successful transition. Without addressing these critical issues, the extension of the transitional period may not yield the desired outcomes.”

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue, particularly mentioning the Tumaini peace initiative and the need for all parties to actively engage in the peace process. Mr. Yakani urged swift action from the government and non-signatory parties to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to governance and peacebuilding.

As South Sudan moves forward with an extended transitional period, the role of civil society in advocating for transparency, accountability, and good governance remains pivotal. The timely implementation of necessary reforms and initiatives is crucial to building a sustainable path towards stability and progress in the nation.

In conclusion, Mr. Yakani called upon leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment to change and reform, emphasizing that the success of the extended transitional period hinges on decisive action and meaningful engagement with all stakeholders. With collective efforts and a shared vision for a better future, South Sudan can overcome challenges and work towards a more stable and prosperous society.
