Empowering Communities: Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in South Sudan
By Denilson Denike
In a groundbreaking effort to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in South Sudan, communities are coming together to enhance access to essential services and empower individuals across the country. SRHR encompasses a holistic approach to addressing physical health while also considering emotional, mental, and social aspects related to sexuality and reproduction.
By promoting SRHR, individuals have the freedom to make informed decisions about their bodies and reproductive lives, ensuring they can choose sexual activity, select partners, and make decisions about family planning with comprehensive information and accessible services. This commitment aligns with both public health standards and human rights principles, guaranteeing equitable access to information and services that are free from discrimination, coercion, exploitation, or violence.
Access to SRHR services in South Sudan includes vital healthcare services such as contraception, maternal health care, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), safe and legal abortion services, and care for reproductive cancers. These services play a significant role in improving health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals and communities throughout the country.
Furthermore, promoting SRHR empowers women and girls, advancing gender equality and providing opportunities for education, workforce participation, and community involvement. Upholding these rights ensures dignity and equality for all individuals, regardless of background or circumstances.
Efforts to address gender-based violence, including sexual assault and coercion, are paramount. Strategies must encompass legal protections for survivors and community-based initiatives that prevent violence and offer support to survivors within South Sudanese communities.
Jamnel Care Organization, a national non-government organization funded by Amplify Change, is leading the charge in South Sudan with its project “Promoting a Safe, Responsive Sexual Reproductive Health Rights Environment for Girls and Women in Juba, South Sudan.” This initiative includes a comprehensive study of existing policies and legislative frameworks, advocacy platforms for women, community media talks on human rights issues, and monitoring human rights violations against women and girls to advocate for policy changes.
Communities in South Sudan are urged to advocate for improved access to essential SRHR services, stand against stigma and discrimination, and take action to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. By prioritizing SRHR, South Sudan is taking significant strides towards achieving sustainable development and promoting human rights for all citizens.
