High-Level Committee to Release Findings on Election Roadmap Implementation Tomorrow
In a recent press conference, Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), addressed concerns regarding the forthcoming release of the high-level committee’s evaluation findings on the implementation of the election roadmap. Yakani expressed surprise at media reports suggesting that the committee would make decisions regarding the fate of the election, emphasizing that such a mandate falls within the jurisdiction of the National Election Commission.
Yakani stated, “If there is any need to extend the period for the conduct of the election beyond December 2024, it should be done based on technical considerations rather than political influence. The National Election Commission should have the prerogative to inform the nation about the election’s status and any potential extensions.”
Highlighting challenges in creating a conducive environment for the election, Yakani pointed out delays in starting voter registration and the financial strain on civil servants. He urged for transparent communication from the high-level committee and called upon the presidency for immediate action upon receipt of the official findings.
Furthermore, Yakani emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue among political parties to ensure a peaceful transition from conflict to stability, in line with the revitalized peace agreement. He appealed to national leadership to prioritize political consensus and decision-making for a successful electoral process.
The high level committee is expected to unveil its findings on Monday, shedding light on the progress and challenges in implementing the election roadmap. Stay tuned for updates as the nation awaits crucial decisions on the future of the electoral process.
