Integrity South Sudan Calls for Urgent Action in Reconstituting Anti-Corruption Commission

Juba – July 1st, 2024, In a statement released today, Integrity South Sudan, an organization dedicated to transparency and accountability, has expressed deep concern over the delay in reconstituting the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission. This delay not only hampers the fight against corruption but also violates the peace agreement, as stipulated in Chapter IV, Article 4.4 and 4.4.1.7.

“The government’s failure to promptly reconstitute the Anti-Corruption Commission is a hindrance to tackling corruption effectively and undermines the peace agreement,” said Lodiong David Lubang, Communication & Media officer at Integrity South Sudan.

The peace agreement mandates that within two months of the transitional period, the President, in consultation with the First Vice President and Vice Presidents, nominates the head of the Anti-Corruption Commission for approval by the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA).

While acknowledging the passage of the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission policy by the parliament, critical challenges such as funding constraints and landlord disputes persist, hindering the commission’s operations.

“Without adequate resources, the commission is unable to carry out investigations, enforce anti-corruption measures, or engage in preventive efforts, thereby impeding progress in fighting corruption,” added Lubang.

Integrity South Sudan calls upon the government to expedite the reconstitution process, allocate necessary resources, and promptly address the rental arrears issue to provide a conducive working environment for the commission.

“The fight against corruption is essential for the development and stability of our nation. It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to support the Anti-Corruption Commission in fulfilling its mandate,” emphasized Lubang.
