Juba City Council Mayor, H.W Flora Gabriel Modi, has overturned the recent decision to close down the UAP insurance company made by her Deputy Mayor for Social Services. Mayor Modi has officially declared the company back in business.
Deputy Mayor Thiik Thiik Mayardit had shut down UAP on Wednesday following a dispute with the national staff and their termination. However, Mayor Modi disagreed with her subordinate and reversed the decision on Thursday. She argued that proper procedures were not followed and pointed out that UAP is an international company that falls outside their jurisdiction.
Mrs. Modi has encouraged the National Ministry of Labor to handle the disputes between UAP and its national staff, who have been engaged in a battle with the insurance firm over alleged underpayment and a discriminatory working environment for some time now.
The Ministry of Labor has also disputed Deputy Mayor Thiik Thiik’s decision to shut down UAP, stating that the matter has been escalated to the national ministry level, and the city municipality no longer has the authority to intervene in the issue between UAP and its striking staff.
