‎Magwi County Implements Ban on Tramadol and Charcoal Export in New Crackdown

‎Magwi County authorities have announced a strict crackdown aimed at curbing drug abuse and illegal logging. On December 8, 2025, County Commissioner Pole-pole Benjamin Olum issued two key directives: a ban on the sale of Tramadol and a prohibition on the export of charcoal produced within the county.

‎The order targets pharmacies and drug shops, explicitly forbidding the sale of Tramadol and other “toxic substances.” Violators risk heavy fines, closure of their businesses, and legal action. Officials cite a worrying rise in Tramadol abuse, particularly among young people in Magwi’s major towns, as the primary reason for the crackdown.

‎In addition, a separate directive bans all exports of charcoal from Magwi County to neighboring countries, including Uganda. Authorities warn that any charcoal found in stores, forests, or along roads will be confiscated and auctioned. Proceeds from the auctions will be allocated to local road rehabilitation projects.

‎Security agencies, health officials, and community leaders have been instructed to enforce these orders immediately. The measures aim to address rising concerns over drug abuse and environmental degradation caused by illegal logging.

‎Magwi County officials emphasize that these actions are crucial steps toward safeguarding public health and protecting the region’s natural resources.
