National Legislative Assembly Formed Committee to Investigate Widespread Illegal Logging in Central Equatoria State
In a significant move towards combating environmental degradation and illegal logging, the National Legislative Assembly has formed a committee to investigate the alarming rise of illegal logging activities in Morobo County of Central Equatoria State. The action comes in response to persistent advocacy efforts by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO).
Expressing gratitude for the positive response, Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, commended the national legislative assembly leadership, led by Rt. Hon. Nunu Kumba.
“We are pleased with the prompt action taken by the National Legislative Assembly to address the issue of illegal logging in Morobo County. This investigation is crucial in curbing the detrimental effects of these activities on our environment,’’ Yakani Stated.
Yakani highlighted the broader implications of illegal logging, emphasizing its role in fueling violence within communities and hindering the equitable distribution of natural resources. He urged for targeted sanctions against those engaged in illegal logging, stressing the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
“The issue of illegal logging is not just a local concern, but a global one with significant impact on climate change,” Yakani remarked. “We call upon the international community to join hands in addressing this pressing issue and supporting efforts to combat illegal logging in South Sudan.”
As CEPO remains vigilant and committed to monitoring the committee’s progress, Yakani emphasized the need for collaborative action involving various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Environment & Forestry, Concern Authorities, local governments, and communities. Together, they strive to ensure that perpetrators of illegal logging are brought to justice and deterred from further environmental exploitation.
With the formation of the investigative committee and growing momentum in the fight against illegal logging, the collective efforts of CEPO and the National Legislative Assembly signal a promising step towards safeguarding South Sudan’s natural resources and combating environmental crimes.
