National Parliament Ratifies Nile Basin Treaty Corporation Framework Agreement, Yakani Urges Proactive Engagement
In a significant move towards sustainable development, the South Sudan National Parliament ratified the Nile Basin Treaty Corporation Framework Agreement on July 8th, marking a crucial step towards becoming an active member in the Nile basin ethnicity. Executive Director of CEPO, Mr. Edmund Yakani, commended the Parliament for breaking the silence on the issue after 11 years of advocacy efforts.
Yakani emphasized the importance of resolving disagreements surrounding water security, as outlined in article 14 sub-article B of the treaty. He urged the government and Parliament to speed up the resolution process to ensure effective cooperation and utilization of water resources in the region.
Furthermore, Yakani is actively participating in the Nairobi Peace talks aimed at fostering inclusive intra-party dialogue between the government of national unity and non-signatory opposition groups. He urged political leaders to prioritize the country’s stability and prosperity by coming together to reach a consensus on a new transitional process.
Highlighting the economic and humanitarian challenges faced by the country, Yakani called upon politicians to put public interest above personal or party agendas. He emphasized the need for citizens to actively engage in the political transition process and hold leaders accountable for their actions.
As a testament to his commitment to peace and stability, Yakani announced the establishment of a citizen engagement movement to ensure the success of the transitional processes in the country. The message is clear – unity and proactive engagement are essential for building a peaceful and prosperous future for all citizens.
