President Kiir Explores Strategic Partnership with CNPC to Boost South Sudan’s Oil Sector

President Salva Kiir of South Sudan engaged in discussions with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to revamp the nation’s oil sector. The high-level meeting focused on critical reforms aimed at enhancing oil production by establishing a new refinery and expanding distribution networks.
One of the key proposals put forward was the creation of an alternative pipeline running through Djibouti via Ethiopia. This initiative intends to bolster export capabilities for the burgeoning extraction activities in Blocks 3 and 7, underscoring the government’s unwavering dedication to harnessing South Sudan’s vast oil potential for sustainable development and improved energy security to facilitate key infrastructure projects.
Following the talks, President Dai Houliang of CNPC expressed the corporation’s steadfast commitment to fostering a strategic partnership with South Sudan. He emphasized the mutual benefits that could arise from collaboration in various areas, indicating a promising step towards driving economic growth and progress for both parties.
Noteworthy in the discussions was the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and security of workers involved in pipeline operations and ongoing exploration work. This aspect was identified as a crucial factor for the successful execution of projects in Block 3 and Block 7.
Furthermore, Dr. Chol Thon, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, conveyed President Kiir’s forward-looking vision to invest in green energies. This forward-thinking approach aligns with global trends towards sustainability and the diversified utilization of energy sources, showcasing South Sudan’s commitment to embracing modern energy practices.
In response to these developments, Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, lauded President Kiir’s efforts to explore innovative avenues for bringing South Sudanese oil to international markets. He stressed the importance of investing oil revenue in productive sectors like agriculture and infrastructure for long-term prosperity.
Emphasizing the necessity of political stability for successful investments, Mr. Yakani urged South Sudan’s political elites to prioritize peace and stability to attract beneficial partnerships. He underscored the significance of transparency and accountability in operations across the oil sector to ensure sustainable growth and development.
