In a significant step towards fostering national unity and stability, President Salva Kiir Mayardit met with a delegation of Catholic Bishops on Monday to discuss strategies for reconciliation and peace-building in South Sudan. The meeting comes in the wake of the recent Eucharistic Congress and the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Catholic Church in South Sudan and Sudan.

Leading the delegation, His Eminence Cardinal Dr. Stephen Ameyu emphasized the urgent need for the government to prioritize peace and reconciliation. The Cardinal urged for decisive measures to ensure a secure environment where all citizens can live harmoniously.

“President Kiir is recognized as a man of peace,” Cardinal Stephen stated, noting that the President had briefed the Bishops on the Tumaini peace initiative. The initiative is set to include government negotiations in Nairobi aimed at establishing lasting peace in the nation.

In response, President Kiir expressed his commitment to upholding peace throughout South Sudan, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to tackling the challenges currently facing the country.

The discussion extended to the troubling situation in neighboring Sudan, where ongoing conflict between rival generals has led to significant turmoil. Both President Kiir and the Bishops called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged the warring factions to seek a path towards sustainable peace.

This meeting highlights the critical collaboration between church leaders and the government in securing a non-violent future for the South Sudanese people, emphasizing the shared responsibility in building a cohesive society.
