South Sudan Appoints New ICT Leaders, Prioritizes Digital Economy Growth

South Sudan’s digital future takes a significant step forward as Eng. Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak has been appointed as the new Undersecretary of the Ministry of ICT, alongside Gieth Kon Mathiang, who assumes the role of Director General of the National Communication Authority (NCA). Both officials pledged to accelerate the country’s digital economy transformation during their official inductions on Tuesday.
During the ceremony, the officials received a warm welcome from Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Michael Makuei Lueth, and Deputy Minister David Yauyau Jankuchi. Eng. Nyak expressed his commitment to making South Sudan’s internet infrastructure the fastest in the region, emphasizing the importance of connectivity for national development. He also highlighted plans to leverage artificial intelligence to close digital gaps both locally and internationally.
Gieth Kon Mathiang, in his remarks, assured the Minister that he intends to build upon the achievements of his predecessor, Dr. Lado Wani Kenyi, focusing on strengthening the corporate sector within the NCA and maintaining continuity in the country’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.
Eng. Nyak and Mathiang, who succeeded Dr. Kenyi and Napoleon Adok Gai respectively, are seen as pivotal figures in the country’s ongoing pursuit of a robust digital economy, aiming to harness technology to foster inclusive growth and innovation across South Sudan.
