Heartfelt tributes pour in for a champion of truth and resilience as the media community mourns his untimely passing
The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) is mourning the sudden loss of Charles Wote, a dedicated journalist known for his passion, integrity, and commitment to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Wote, who worked tirelessly for Eye Radio, passed away recently, leaving a profound void in the media fraternity and the hearts of many.
Described as a master storyteller, Wote’s work resonated deeply with the people of South Sudan. His focus on pressing issues—from climate change to peace reporting—earned him the prestigious 2023 UJOSS Award for Climate Change Reporting. He traveled to some of the most remote regions of the country, shedding light on important issues such as flooding, public financial management, and the nation’s ongoing peace process, ensuring that the struggles and resilience of South Sudanese communities were heard.
“Charles was not just a reporter; he was a beacon of ethical journalism, unwavering in his commitment to truth and solutions-driven reporting,” said Majak Daniel Kuany Alier, Secretary General of UJOSS. “His loss is a major blow not just to the media community, but to the entire nation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. His legacy will endure in the stories he told and the impact he made.”
Reactions from fellow journalists highlight Wote’s influence and the void his passing has created. Martin Manyiel Wugol, a diplomat and journalist, shared, “The untimely passing of comrade Charles Wote is a major loss. He was a humble patriot with a promising future, and his dedication to journalism was unparalleled.”
Another journalist, Waakhi Wudu of VOA, expressed his grief, stating, “Charles, why are you gone? Your death is the most devastating news of this quarter of the year—a cruel twist of fate that feels both unreal and unbearable.” He emphasized Wote’s role as a pillar of truth and justice in the media landscape.
Wote’s dedication extended beyond journalism; he was known for his kindness and approachability, qualities that endeared him to many within the industry. As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that his legacy will live on—not only in the hearts of those he inspired but also in the impactful work he championed throughout his career.
As South Sudan mourns one of its finest, the words echo in the hearts of many: Rest in power, Charles Wote. Your voice will never be forgotten.
