South Sudan National Human Rights Commission Facing Premises Crisis, CEPO Calls for Urgent Action
In a recent statement, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), expressed deep concern over the current situation facing the South Sudan National Human Rights Commission.
Yakani emphasized the importance of addressing the issue promptly, stating, “My concern is a question: where are the premises of our South Sudan National Human Rights Commission? We are aware that our South Sudan National Human Rights Commission is being kicked out of their premises and now they’re operating in the house of one of its leaders.”
He further highlighted the significance of protecting the independence and integrity of such a vital institution, questioning why the National Human Rights Commission was facing eviction due to rent issues. Yakani stressed that this situation reflects poorly on South Sudan’s commitment to upholding human rights principles both at the national and international levels.
Calling for action from the Council of Ministers and the National Parliament, especially the Human Rights Committee, Yakani urged for immediate intervention to safeguard the functioning of the National Human Rights Commission and uphold its crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights in South Sudan.
In response to Yakani’s plea, it is hoped that authorities will address this pressing matter swiftly and ensure the National Human Rights Commission is able to carry out its mandate effectively without any hindrances.
