South Sudan Peace Talks in Nairobi Shift Focus to Economic and Justice Issues
Nairobi- Following three days of detailed discussions on political governance and security arrangements, the South Sudan parties and stakeholders involved in the Nairobi peace talks have now delved into in-depth discussions around economic and justice matters. The ongoing discussions aim to generate consensus for drafting documents that will be signed among all parties involved.
Amid some hard positions on the agenda topics, observers have noted a high level of commitment and a positive spirit for negotiation and mediation from all parties and stakeholders.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, praised the facilitation efforts of the Kenya mediation team, stating, “The mediation process is progressive and encouraging if the political leaders maintain positive attitudes for dialogue.”
Mr. Yakani emphasized the importance of political maturity, discipline, and a willingness to embrace compromises for the success of the peace talks. He also highlighted the need for inclusivity, noting that despite efforts, female delegates have not yet secured a direct seat at the mediation table. “Opposition political parties should ensure female representation at the peace talks,” he urged.
“We appreciate the Kenya mediation team for their remarkable efforts in making the mediation procedure smooth,” Mr. Yakani added, expressing gratitude for the ongoing support and facilitation provided by the mediating team in Nairobi.
The peace talks continue to make progress, with hopes for meaningful agreements to be reached on economic and justice issues in the coming days as the stakeholders work towards sustainable peace and political stability in South Sudan.
