UN Helicopter Attack in South Sudan Claims Lives, Sparks Outrage and Calls for Accountability

Tragedy struck today when a United Nations helicopter, involved in an evacuation operation in Nasir, Upper Nile State, was fired upon, resulting in the death of a crew member and serious injuries to two others. The assault highlights the perilous security situation in the region amid ongoing political tensions.

The helicopter, part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), was conducting a rescue mission at the request of various parties following violent clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and armed youth that have led to casualties and civilian displacement. During the operation, several SSPDF personnel were killed, including a General who sustained injuries, exacerbating the tragedy of the day.

“This attack on UN personnel is utterly abhorrent and potentially constitutes a war crime under international law,” stated Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS. “We deeply regret the tragic loss of our colleague and express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.”

Haysom further lamented the loss of life among those being extracted, emphasizing the importance of the assurances of safe passage that were granted for the evacuation. He called for an immediate investigation to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the attack.

In light of these violent events, UNMISS is urging all factions involved to refrain from further hostility. The mission is appealing to South Sudanese leaders to engage in constructive dialogue to defuse escalating tensions and reinforce the security situation in Nasir. Upholding commitments to ceasefire agreements and the integrity of the Revitalized Peace Agreement remains crucial for stability in the region.

The UN mission continues to advocate for the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel in South Sudan, reinforcing the need for urgent measures to ensure their safety and the preservation of peace.
