Urgent Call for Economic Stability and Leadership Action from Civil Society in South Sudan

A group of civil society delegates, under the Tumaini Initiative, are calling on the government leadership in South Sudan to urgently address the growing economic instability plaguing the country. Mr. Edmund Yakani, The Executive Director of CEPO, part of the civil society delegation to the Nairobi peace talks, highlighted the pressing need for action to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens due to the economic crisis.

The government delegation has been commended for their efforts in briefing top leaders on the progress made under the Tumaini Initiative, but more needs to be done to address the dire situation affecting civil servants, teachers, and soldiers who are struggling to make ends meet. With some civil servants going without salaries for nine months and schools closing as teachers seek alternative sources of income, the need for immediate action is critical.

The civil society activists are urging the presidency to take decisive steps to stabilize the economy and ensure the well-being of the citizens. They emphasized the importance of political compromises to facilitate a successful transition towards a more stable political and economic environment. The call for decisive leadership to address revenue collection from non-oil sources and put an end to corruption was also raised as a crucial step towards economic recovery.

The citizens of South Sudan are looking to their leaders to prioritize their welfare and take concrete actions to alleviate the suffering caused by the current economic crisis. The civil society’s appeal for swift and effective decision-making from the government underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate intervention to prevent further hardship.

As the nation grapples with economic challenges and instability, the plea from civil society serves as a reminder of the leadership’s responsibility to prioritize the well-being of their people and work towards a sustainable and prosperous future for all citizens of South Sudan.
