42 Dead and 35 Injured in Abyei Conflict, Including UN Peacekeeper


Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan, witnessed a tragic incident on January 27, 2024, as armed clashes between Abyei residents and Nuer militants claimed the lives of 42 individuals and left 35 others injured. Among the casualties was a United Nations peacekeeper from Ghana.

The violence erupted in the areas of Nyinkuac, Majbong, and Khadian, according to UNISFA. The organization is currently working to independently verify the exact number of casualties, injuries, and displaced individuals resulting from the clashes.

Dr. Rou Manyiel Rou, the secretary general of Abyei administrative area, released a statement confirming the death toll of 42 and the injuries sustained by 35 people. 

The situation remains tense as armed attacks occurred at 16:45hrs on January 27, resulting in civilian casualties and necessitating the evacuation of affected individuals to UNISFA bases for their safety.

In response to the tragic incident, UNISFA has called for a prompt and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attacks within Abyei town and its surrounding areas. The mission aims to ensure that all those responsible for the violence are held accountable for their actions.

The Abyei region has been a contentious area between Sudan and South Sudan, with both countries claiming ownership. The presence of various armed groups and ongoing disputes have contributed to a fragile security situation in the region.
