China Donates 8,808 Tents to South Sudan

In a gesture of goodwill, the Chinese government handed over 8,808 emergency assistance tents to South Sudan during a ceremony held in Juba on Wednesday 10th January 2024.

H.E. Amb. MA Qiang, alongside Hon. Albino Akol Atak, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disasters Management of South Sudan, Hon. Gatwech Peter Kulang, Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, and Hon. William Chan Achuil, Undersecretary of MHADM, attended the event.

The donation comes as a response to the urgent needs of the people affected by the devastating floods and the ongoing crisis in Sudan. China has been a steadfast supporter of South Sudan, providing emergency assistance for many years, benefiting over one million individuals.

Amb. MA Qiang highlighted the vulnerability of South Sudan to the impacts of climate change.

“South Sudan is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the effects of climate change,” He stated.

He further expressed China’s commitment to continue supporting South Sudan’s development efforts, including infrastructure projects, trade expansion, and joint investments.

In addition to the tent donation, Amb. MA Qiang announced that the Chinese Government is willing to provide South Sudan with 980 tons of emergency food assistance in the first half of this year. This aid aims to alleviate food insecurity, which has been a pressing concern in the Country.

The Handover Ceremony marks another milestone in the longstanding partnership between China and South Sudan. It reflects the strong bond between the two nations and their shared commitment to supporting each other in times of need.
