Embassies and UN Mission in South Sudan Condemn Attack on Humanitarian Convoy in Jonglei State

World Food Programme convoy in Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), condemnation has poured in from various quarters.

The Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan (ISS), Bol Deng Bol, has appealed to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the governments of Jonglei State and GPAA to collaborate consistently in order to avert future similar occurrences.

The attack on the humanitarian convoy, which occurred on February 9 in Anyidi Payam of Bor South County, Jonglei State, has drawn the fierce criticism of both the local and international communities. Key embassies, including those of Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have joined UNMISS in unequivocally condemning this act of violence.

Expressing their solidarity with the peacekeepers and humanitarian workers, the embassies stressed that such individuals should never be targeted for violence. They called upon the transitional government of South Sudan and all individuals wielding influence to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of those providing aid and support to the South Sudanese people.

At this critical juncture, marked by a surge in civilian armament amid an alleged nationwide disarmament exercise, organizations such as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have been reminded of the escalating risks faced by their personnel on the ground. However, attention has also been drawn to the government’s paramount responsibility of safeguarding civilians and humanitarian actors under all circumstances.

In light of the recent attack, it is crucial to hold those responsible for this deplorable act accountable for their actions. The international community stands united in demanding justice for the victims and their families. Ambassador Michael J. Adler has released a statement, which can be accessed here ss.usembassy.gov/troika-stateme, condemning the attack and emphasizing the need for swift action.

As South Sudan continues its journey toward stability and peace, it is imperative that collaborative efforts between UNMISS, the government, and the local authorities are strengthened to provide a secure environment for humanitarian operations. The protection of civilians and aid workers must remain a top priority to ensure the delivery of crucial assistance to those in need across the nation.
