El-Merriekh Bentiu Crowned South Sudan Premier League Champions Despite Final Day Defeat

El-Merriekh SC Bentiu were officially crowned champions of the second edition of the South Sudan Premier League on Sunday despite suffering defeat in their final match of the season at Juba Stadium.
The title-clinching campaign marked a historic achievement for the Bentiu-based side, whose consistency and defensive strength throughout the season proved enough to secure the championship crown ahead of their rivals.
The coronation ceremony attracted top football and government officials, including Atong Kuol Manyang, Francis Amin Michael, and Bush Buse State Minister for Culture Youth and Sports alongside vice presidents and members of the federation’s executive committee.
The season-ending event brought the curtain down on an exciting campaign filled with intense competition, dramatic encounters, and standout individual performances across South Sudan’s top-flight football league.
Jamus FC Stars Shine Bright
Jamus FC emerged as the season’s most dominant attacking side, collecting two of the league’s biggest individual honors.
Midfielder Sampi Ousimane was named Player of the Season after an outstanding campaign that saw him play a pivotal role in Jamus FC’s success throughout the year.
Meanwhile, striker George Rodriguez secured the Golden Boot award after scoring an impressive 23 goals, finishing as the league’s top scorer and one of the competition’s most feared forwards.
El-Merriekh Bentiu Rewarded for Defensive Excellence
Champions El-Merriekh Bentiu also dominated the defensive awards following a disciplined and tactically organized season.
Goalkeeper Daniel Magot received the Goalkeeper of the Season award for his consistent performances and crucial saves that helped his side maintain one of the best defensive records in the league.
Head coach Ibrahim Hussein was named Coach of the Season after guiding El-Merriekh Bentiu to the league title with a series of impressive tactical displays and strong leadership from the touchline.
Fair Play and Special Recognition
Lion Hunters FC Yei earned the Fair Play Award in recognition of their discipline, professionalism, and sportsmanship throughout the demanding season.
In one of the ceremony’s emotional moments, George Francis of Al Ghazala Wau received a Special Recognition Award from the federation for his long-standing contribution to football development in South Sudan.
Federation officials praised the continued growth of football in the country, noting that the second edition of the league showcased rising talent, improved competitiveness, and increasing fan support across South Sudan.
With the 2025/2026 season now concluded, attention will shift to the upcoming transfer window as clubs begin preparations for what is expected to be an even more competitive third edition of the South Sudan Premier League.
