Finance Minister Shooting at Wounded Heroes Instead of Cracking Down on Black Market Dealers

By Majur Chol Khor

The recent protests by wounded heroes in South Sudan highlight the deep economic crisis that the country is facing. While these heroes who sacrificed for the nation are begging for survival, the Finance Minister Dr. Baak Barnabas Chol seems more concerned with maintaining his lavish lifestyle than addressing the dire situation of the people.

The soaring dollar rate inflation and the rampant presence of black market dealers are clear signs of the failure of the current Minister of finance to stabilize the economy. Instead of focusing on implementing reforms and policies that would benefit the people, the Minister seems content to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the citizens.

It is appalling to see how some civil servants are unable to afford food while the Minister lives in luxury. President Kiir’s appointment of Dr. BBC has clearly been a disappointment, as the economy continues to spiral downwards under his watch.

As the Elections approach, it is becoming increasingly evident that the majority of South Sudanese will not have the opportunity to vote, as they struggle to feed themselves and their families. How can a government expect its people to participate in the democratic process when their basic needs are not being met?

The recent incidents of police shooting at wounded heroes only serve to highlight the misplaced priorities of the government. Instead of using force against those who have already sacrificed so much for the nation, why not use that same energy to crack down on the black market dealers who are exploiting the economic situation for their own gain?

It is time for Minister BBC to step up and take action to address the economic crisis in South Sudan.

Shooting at wounded heroes will not solve the country’s problems, but targeting the root causes of inflation and black market activities just might. It is time for the government to show real leadership and prioritize the well-being of its people over personal interests.
