South Sudan Launches SDGS Voluntary National Review 2024

In a significant move towards sustainable development, the Government of South Sudan officially launched its seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) plans on Thursday, paving the way for a better future for its citizens. These plans will be presented at the UN General Assembly in New York in 2024, highlighting key focus areas such as economic recovery, clean water and sanitation, health, education, security, agriculture, food production, and climate change among others.

The launch of the SDGs brought together government officials, UN agencies, and stakeholders to collaborate on finding solutions to the various challenges facing the people of South Sudan.

Speaking at the launch event, Minister of Peace Building Hon. Stephen Par Kuol emphasized the importance of peace and security in achieving the SDGs for the country’s development.

He called on UN agencies to provide technical training to empower the people in addressing critical issues affecting South Sudan.

Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Agok Makur Kur, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to supporting the government through financial aid in overcoming challenges in the coming years. He emphasized the role of stakeholders in continuing to engage in the process towards sustainable development.

Minister of General Education and Instructions, Hon. Awut Deng Achuil, expressed gratitude for the support in the education sector, especially amidst challenges posed by climate change.

She stressed the need for the upcoming SDGs summit in New York to focus on improving education in South Sudan, ensuring that all vulnerable children have access to schools across the country.

UN Resident Coordinator Anita Kiki reiterated the UN agencies’ dedication to supporting the people of South Sudan. She urged the government to address security issues, boost the country’s economy, and enhance the health sector to create a peaceful environment for all citizens.

In the words of Minister Par Kol, “For South Sudan to achieve all the SDGs, peace and security must be the top priority. Together, with the support of our partners, we can build a better future for our nation.”

The launch of the SDGs signals a new chapter in South Sudan’s journey towards sustainable development, promising hope and progress for its people.
