Civil Society Calls for Peace Amid Rising Tensions Between Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area

Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, made a heartfelt appeal to the political leadership of Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area, urging them to prioritize peace and unity amidst escalating tensions. The recent exchange of confrontational statements between the two regions following a visit by the Governor of Unity State has raised concerns about the potential for violence.

Yakani emphasized the need for both communities to take responsibility and refrain from engaging in any activities that may escalate into violent confrontations. He stressed that such exchanges of statements can sometimes lead to deadly violence, highlighting the importance of maintaining political discipline and avoiding aggressive rhetoric.

“As a South Sudanese, I appeal to you to avoid inciting violence due to these statements. It is crucial for the top leadership of Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area to uphold principles of peace and cooperation,” Yakani stated.

He called upon the leaders of both regions to exercise restraint and act in the best interests of their communities, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts. Yakani also urged the Council of States to closely monitor the situation and prevent further escalation of tensions between Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area.

The appeal from CEPO comes at a critical juncture, as efforts to promote stability and harmony in South Sudan face challenges from internal tensions.
