The Republic of South Sudan, represented by the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), has taken the lead in championing the regional integration agenda on standards and quality within the East African Community (EAC). This initiative was highlighted during the 26th meeting of the East African Standards Committee (EASC) held in Arusha, Tanzania from 8th to 10th May 2024.

In a press statement to the media on Tuesday, Hon. Gloria Nyoka Joseph, Executive Director of the South Sudan Bureau of Standards, emphasized the country’s commitment to driving the standards and quality system within the EAC. As the current chairperson of the East African Community Heads of State Summit, headed by H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, and chaired by Executive Director Gloria Nyoka, South Sudan is taking proactive steps to ensure adherence to international best practices.

“South Sudan National Bureau of Standards aims to develop, promote, and maintain the use of national, regional, and international standards. Our focus is on promoting quality in commodities, products, and services while providing conformity assessment services to enhance consumer protection and uphold public health and environmental safety standards,” stated Nyoka.

Nyoka further explained that SSNBS is a member of the East African Standards Body, African Regional Standards Organization, and International Standards Organization, showcasing the country’s commitment to aligning with global standards and enhancing trade facilitation.

During the meeting, a total of 85 final draft East African standards were endorsed, accompanied by two critical amendments. Additionally, the adoption of 56 international standards and three African Regional standards exemplifies the region’s dedication to upholding global best practices and fostering initiatives that boost trade facilitation and consumer protection.
