African Union Steps Up to Protect Journalists: IFJ and FAJ Applaud Historic Decision by Peace and Security Council

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) are lauding the groundbreaking declaration made by the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union on 2nd September 2024, which prioritizes the protection of African journalists for the first time.

During a momentous meeting chaired by Ambassador Churchill Ewumbue-Monono, the current Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council, the Council addressed the urgent issues surrounding journalist safety and access to information in conflict zones across Africa. This pivotal session signifies a crucial step towards ensuring the security and well-being of journalists and upholding the right to access information, a cause that the IFJ and FAJ have long championed.

In a comprehensive briefing to the Council during its 1230th meeting, FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman shed light on the perilous conditions faced by journalists in Africa, particularly those operating in conflict-ridden areas. These journalists endure threats, violence, arbitrary arrests, attacks on women journalists, and severe restrictions on information access, greatly impacting African citizens, especially during times of crisis.

The Peace and Security Council also heard from AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, H.E. Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, who emphasized the critical importance of protecting freedom of expression for developmental rights in Africa. He underscored that attacks on journalists equate to attacks on all citizens and called for combined efforts to safeguard journalists’ fundamental human rights.

FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman welcomed the Council’s decision as a beacon of hope for journalists, signaling a transformative step towards creating a safe environment for media professionals who risk their lives to uphold democracy. IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger hailed the move as a game-changer for press freedom in Africa, emphasizing the commitment to combat crimes against journalists and protect media freedoms.
