Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) issued a statement urging for the establishment of a clear and transparent framework for civilians to seek justice against crimes committed by members of law enforcement agencies. Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, commended the efforts of the Minister of Interior, the judiciary, and the Special Emergence Court in addressing crimes perpetrated by law enforcement officials against civilians.

Highlighting the need for accountability and protection of civilians, Mr. Yakani emphasized the importance of creating mechanisms that ensure the safety and security of individuals who find themselves in conflict with law enforcement officers. He raised concerns about incidents involving high-ranking officials within law enforcement agencies engaging in conflicts with civilians, resulting in loss of life and intimidation.

Mr. Yakani called for an expansion of the courts’ scope to address financial crimes committed by law enforcement personnel, particularly instances where traffic police officers exploit civilians through illicit monetary practices. He stressed the necessity for traffic directors to uphold accountability and support civilians in reporting misconduct by officers.

Expressing apprehension about potential interference in judicial processes by influential figures within law enforcement agencies, Mr. Yakani underscored the importance of maintaining the independence and impartiality of the courts. He emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the vital role of the Special Emergence Court in delivering fair and unbiased legal proceedings.

As CEPO advocates for a justice system that prioritizes the rights and protection of civilians, Mr. Yakani reiterated the organization’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Interior to promote public education initiatives on the significance of the court’s function. He emphasized the crucial role of the court in ensuring due legal processes when conflicts arise between civilians and law enforcement agencies.

The call for transparency, accountability, and impartiality in addressing crimes committed by law enforcement agencies resonates strongly as CEPO seeks to uphold justice and safeguard the rights of all individuals within the Sudanese community.
