Finnish Church Leaders Address Refugee Crisis in South Sudan During Solidarity Visit

A delegation of Finnish church leaders visited South Sudan this week to assess the humanitarian situation at the Gorom Refugee Camp, highlighting the ongoing refugee crisis in the region. The delegation included Bishop Dr. Paul Yugusuk of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, Bishop Ezra Bakoyogo of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Sudan, and Muslim leader Juma Ali, alongside prominent Finnish figures such as Most Reverend Dr. Tapio Luoma, Archbishop of Turku, and Dr. Tomi Jarvinen, International Executive Director of Finland Church Aid (FCA).

The visit served as a follow-up to the ecumenical pilgrimage made in February 2023, which included Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Moderator for the Church of Scotland. These leaders aimed to emphasize the need for inclusive dialogue to effectively implement the peace agreement and promote the role of religious leaders in fostering peace and humanitarian support.

During their two-day visit, the Finnish delegation engaged with local leaders and visited government officials to discuss strategies for addressing the humanitarian needs in South Sudan. They also assessed ongoing projects funded by FCA, the largest development NGO in Finland, renowned for providing disaster relief and professional humanitarian assistance worldwide.

The church leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration among religious and traditional leaders and international partners to support South Sudan’s development amid ongoing challenges. They are committed to advocating for peaceful solutions and enhancing educational opportunities, livelihoods, and the right to peace for communities affected by the crisis.

Through their visit, the Finnish delegation aims not only to draw attention to the urgent needs in Gorom but also to amplify the message of hope and resilience among those facing adversity in South Sudan.
