South Sudan Youth Innovators to Showcase Solutions at Regional Competition in Kigali
Two young and talented South Sudanese innovators are set to represent their country at an upcoming regional competition in Kigali, where they will be competing with counterparts from Kenya, Madagascar, and Mozambique. The duo earned the opportunity after emerging as winners in a recent climate challenge contest that aimed to address the impacts of climate change and enhance sexual and reproductive health services in flood-affected areas.
Organized with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the competition seeks to foster innovative solutions developed by youth to tackle critical issues related to climate change and community resilience. Kidan Abraha, the Program Advisor for UNFPA, highlighted the importance of providing a platform for South Sudanese youth to showcase their talents and contribute to climate action at a regional level, underscoring the significance of empowering young people to drive positive change.
Nelson Kwaje, representing Scenius Hub, an organization dedicated to mentoring youth, emphasized that engagement on climate change and sexual and reproductive health and rights serves to raise awareness and promote gender-responsive solutions among young innovators in South Sudan. The program aims to empower youth to develop impactful ideas that can address critical societal challenges while fostering community resilience.
The journey for these two aspiring innovators began with intensive mentorship sessions on September 23, 2024, where Gaso Grace and Donnas Elia Dazanga emerged as the victorious team from Young Positive South Sudan. Their success has garnered them the opportunity to showcase their innovative solutions at the upcoming Youth Connect Summit in Kigali, scheduled to commence on November 7.
With a focus on promoting talent, creativity, and collaboration, the initiative supported by UNFPA and facilitated by Impact Health Organization (IHO) and Scenius Hub, has provided a platform for young innovators to harness their potential, contribute to sustainable development goals, and represent South Sudan on a regional platform. The recognition and support offered to these young visionaries aim to inspire future generations and drive positive change within the region.
