Goma Youth and Civil Society Unite for Peace and Security in East Africa

Youth leaders, civil society representatives, and peace advocates converged in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, from October 22nd to 24th, 2024, to address the pressing challenges and opportunities surrounding peace and security in the East African Community (EAC) and the Great Lakes region. The gathering emphasized the critical role of young leaders, civil society organizations, peace experts, and international partners in fostering dialogue and collaboration for sustainable peace.

Acknowledging the significant impact of conflicts on local communities, especially youth, women, and persons living with disabilities, the participants underscored the urgent need for the inclusion of these marginalized groups in peace processes. They called for practical and immediate action to integrate youth, women, and persons with disabilities in ongoing peace initiatives such as the Nairobi, Luanda, and the Tumaini Initiatives.

The Communique produced at the event outlined key recommendations to prioritize youth empowerment, enhance the participation of women in peace and security efforts, and ensure the involvement of persons with disabilities in conflict resolution mechanisms. It also highlighted the necessity of addressing economic disparities and resource distribution to promote stability and prosperity in the region.

With a resolute commitment to championing the principles articulated in the Communique, the youth, women, persons with disabilities, and civil society organizations called upon governments, private sector entities, regional bodies, and the international community to take concrete steps towards implementing the resolutions. Together, they aim to create a sustainable, inclusive, and peaceful future for all citizens in the EAC, the Great Lakes region, and beyond.

The collaborative efforts of the Goma Youth and Civil Society serve as a beacon of hope and unity in advancing peace and security in East Africa, demonstrating the transformative power of collective action and inclusive dialogue in building a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
