Civil Society Leader Calls for Calm and Dialogue After Armed Confrontation in South Sudan

In a heartfelt address to the nation, Edmond Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), has urged South Sudanese citizens to remain calm in the wake of a recent armed confrontation that caused widespread panic in the capital. The incident, involving a clash between government forces and the bodyguards of the former Director of National Security, occurred late last night.

Yakani emphasized the importance of resisting misinformation and propaganda, calling on the public to avoid falling prey to fear and confusion in these trying times. “We have seen the unfortunate situation unfold; it caused panic and frustration among the civil population,” he stated. “As a civil society, we strongly condemn the attitudes of using guns to resolve misunderstandings — be they between bodyguards or leaders.”

This incident highlights a worrying trend in South Sudan, where political disputes have, at times, escalated into violence. Yakani appealed directly to the bodyguards of political leaders, urging them to remain disciplined and to refrain from using firearms as tools of conflict resolution. “Whenever our leaders politically disagree, do not get involved in the use of guns,” he implored.

The CEPO director also called on South Sudanese leaders to resolve their discontent through dialogue rather than armed confrontation. He reminded them that the use of violence not only endangers the lives of innocent civilians but also those tasked with their protection.

“Our leaders must remember that we did not fight for independence to continue suffering due to their disagreements. We need to foster a spirit of nationalism and respect for our country,” Yakani said.

In an appeal for unity and peace, he called for President Salva Kiir to address the nation, providing much-needed reassurance during this turbulent period. “The nation is in a panic mood and requires to hear a message of hope,” he noted. “Let’s respect our nation and ensure that further tensions do not arise.”

Yakani closed his statement with a hopeful message, urging all citizens to remain vigilant but calm. As South Sudan continues to navigate the challenges of its political landscape, the call for peaceful dialogue remains more pressing than ever.
