South Sudan Government Denounces “Baseless” Allegations in The Sentry Report as Malicious Smear Campaign

The Office of the Press Secretary of the Republic of South Sudan has firmly rebutted a recent report by The Sentry, an organization based in the United States, which claims that the President and his family control over 126 companies within the nation’s business landscape. The press statement describes the allegations as “baseless and malicious,” asserting that they lack credible evidence and are designed to undermine the standing of the First Family.

The statement emphasizes that such accusations are not new, pointing out that The Sentry has a history of allegedly targeting the President and his family in smear campaigns funded by undisclosed entities with potentially ulterior motives.

“The allegations are nothing more than a deliberate witch-hunt intended to destabilize our nation’s unity,” the statement reads, further noting that the President and his family have the right to engage in legitimate business activities, just like any other citizens of South Sudan.

The Press Secretary urged that the businesses attributed to the First Family are not new, with many dating back to 2007, prior to the establishment of the Republic of South Sudan. They argue that portraying these enterprises as products of undue influence misrepresents their history.

Critically, the statement highlights the absence of any concrete evidence to back The Sentry’s claims, suggesting that the report lacked specificity regarding alleged illegal actions, misappropriated funds, or the actual benefits derived from public office. It draws attention to the fact that some companies mentioned, such as the Gemtel telecom company linked to the First Lady, have long been inactive, a detail the report seemingly overlooks.

The government’s response calls on media, civil society, and international actors to treat discussions regarding South Sudan with fairness, cautioning that reports lacking thoroughness can jeopardize national stability.

In closing, the Office reiterated President’s commitment to transparency and development for all South Sudanese citizens, reinforcing that unfounded allegations will not deter his resolve to serve the public or uphold justice.

“Rest assured, His Excellency remains focused on the principles of fairness, equality, and justice for all,” the statement concluded.
