The Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, H.E. Simon Ober Mawut, formally welcomed a joint delegation led by H.E. Guang Cong, the UNMISS Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs, on Monday.

The delegation’s visit to Aweil marks the beginning of a comprehensive three-day Political Parties Forum aimed at solidifying collaboration among various political groups within the state. The conference, organized by the Northern Bahr El Ghazal government and facilitated by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) alongside the African Union Mission in South Sudan (AUMISS), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), seeks to unify political parties in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

Governor Mawut expressed optimism about the conference, highlighting its potential to foster democratic governance and a peaceful political transition in South Sudan. “This forum is a critical step towards building cooperation among political parties and ensuring that the peace agreement is upheld in our communities,” he stated.

The upcoming sessions will involve discussions on key topics including the current status of the revitalized peace agreement, the constitution-making process, expanding civic and political space, and preparations for future elections.

The delegation’s arrival was met with enthusiasm at Aweil Airstrip, where they were greeted by the state government leadership. Following a warm reception, the delegates proceeded to the secretariat general for a formal briefing before the conference kicked off on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

As stakeholders, political leaders, and partners come together in Aweil, the forum underscores a renewed commitment towards sustained peace and collaborative governance in South Sudan, promising a progressive dialogue critical for the country’s future.
