CEPO Commends U.S. Accountability Initiatives Against Sabotagers of Peace in South Sudan
The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed the U.S. government’s commitment to hold individuals accountable for obstructing peace efforts in South Sudan. The organization emphasizes that peace in the nation continues to be hindered by those prioritizing personal interests over the collective need for stability and harmony.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, underscored that self-serving interests often take precedence over the public interest in securing peace and stability. He pointed out that the actions of certain political leaders who sabotage peace initiatives pose a significant challenge to the country’s progress. “The lack of political will and commitment among our leaders is a direct consequence of the actions of peace spoilers within both the government and some opposition groups,” Mr. Yakani stated.
He called upon the global community to support the people of South Sudan by taking a firmer stance against those undermining peace efforts. The recent Tumanin Peace Talks serve as a prime example of such sabotage, alongside the prolonged delay in the genuine implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
The U.S. government’s decision to impose visa restrictions on these peace spoilers is seen as a timely and appropriate measure. Mr. Yakani expressed hope that other nations will follow suit in holding accountable those who obstruct peace and stability.
CEPO urges international stakeholders to adopt a proactive approach in holding conflicting political leaders in South Sudan accountable and to emphasize a serious political commitment to achieving peace and stability in the region.
