South Sudan Civil Society Forum Calls for Strong Commitment to Tumaini Peace Initiative Amid Ongoing Challenges

The South Sudan Civil Society Forum (SSCSF) has issued a powerful statement urging all parties involved in the Tumaini Peace Initiative to prioritize peace and demonstrate unwavering commitment to the ongoing dialogue process. As representatives gathered for a strategic three-day meeting in Nairobi from December 16 to 18, they engaged with mediation teams, stakeholders, and opposition groups to reinforce the people’s desire for peace and address misinformation surrounding the Tumaini process.

The SSCSF lauded President Salva Kiir Mayardit for his decision to collaborate with Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto to foster an inclusive, people-centered peace initiative aimed at delivering sustainable peace for the South Sudanese people. This initiative comes in the context of a government delegation returning to Juba for further consultations, where civil society groups voiced their concerns and aspirations for a successful conclusion to the peace talks.

In a detailed message to the government of South Sudan, the SSCSF called for an ongoing commitment to constructive dialogue, urging the administration to resolve outstanding issues and to adhere to the principles outlined in previous accords. The forum also stressed the urgency of repealing certain sections of the National Security Act of 2014, which they argue would safeguard democratic principles such as freedom of expression and assembly.

Acknowledging the patience and restraint showcased by the opposition groups during the government’s recent consultations, the SSCSF called on these groups to engage in peaceful dialogue and focus on the needs and aspirations of the South Sudanese populace. They urged all parties to uphold nonviolent solutions and comply with international humanitarian and human rights laws.

The SSCSF also expressed gratitude toward the mediation team led by Rtd. Lt. General Lazaro Sumbeiywo and reiterated the importance of maintaining impartiality throughout the negotiation process. They called on the international community for continued support, emphasizing political, diplomatic, and financial assistance for the Tumaini initiative while encouraging engagement with all factions to sustain peace efforts.

In a heartfelt appeal to the citizens of South Sudan, the SSCSF stressed the importance of seizing the current opportunity for peace, urging the population to reject violence and misinformation while advocating for justice and reconciliation. They also called on community leaders to play a pivotal role in conflict resolution and healing, as the nation grapples with the enduring impacts of past conflicts.

The SSCSF reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing genuine peace for the people of South Sudan and declared that failure of the Tumaini Initiative is not an option. As the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges, the collective voice of civil society stands resolute, championing the hope for a harmonious future in South Sudan.
