Central Equatoria Governor Extends Christmas Cheer Amidst Ongoing Challenges
In a heartfelt address, Central Equatoria Governor Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani conveyed festive greetings to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, the revitalized transitional government, and the citizens of South Sudan as the Christmas season unfolds. Emphasizing the significance of the holiday, Governor Wani reminded the public that it is a time for celebration, love, and hope, originally marked by the birth of Jesus Christ.
Reflecting on the relative peace experienced this year following years of conflict, Wani urged his constituents to remain aware of ongoing challenges facing Central Equatoria, including insecurity from armed groups, land disputes, communal violence, economic hardships, and issues related to cattle herding. “We are determined to solve these problems, but it requires our unity, goodwill, and practicality to overcome the challenges,” he stated.
Looking ahead, the Governor expressed optimism about the resumption of the Tumaini Peace Initiative, mediated by Lieutenant General Lazarus, as a pathway to achieving consensus among conflicting parties. “We look forward to a new year filled with sustainable peace, healing, forgiveness, justice, and reconciliation,” he said.
In light of safety concerns during the celebrations, Wani assured citizens that appropriate measures are in place to protect lives and property. He also addressed a concerning uptick in cholera cases, announcing the establishment of a high-level committee, led by the Deputy Governor, to manage the outbreak and implement preventive measures. The public has been urged to adhere to health guidelines issued by the National Ministry of Health, focusing on hygiene and sanitation practices.
“To safeguard the lives of our people, everyone should wash their hands with safe water and soap, drink safe water, and maintain proper food preparation procedures,” Wani advised, encouraging vaccinations against cholera.
Concluding his address, the Governor called for reflection, renewed determination, and collective action to improve upon past shortcomings as South Sudan anticipates a hopeful and prosperous 2025. He wished all citizens of Juba and Central Equatoria a Merry Christmas, stressing the need to approach the new year with optimism for lasting peace and joy.
“Let this Christmas be a season of peace and reflection,” Wani concluded, sharing his aspirations for a brighter future for the region and its people.
