The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed the return of the government delegation to the Tumaini Peace Talks this week, expressing hope that the parties at the mediation table will take key compromises to reach a final deal for securing political stability.

In a statement, CEPO Executive Director, Mr. Edmund Yakani praised the return of the government delegation, saying it is a promising development towards making peace and stability a reality. “The success of Tumaini is fully dependent on the style of the political leadership in the government and opposition parties offered before the Kenya-led mediation,” Yakani said.

Yakani emphasized that this round of mediation is a “real exposure” of South Sudanese political elites before the citizens and the regional and international community, adding that it is up to them to prove their commitment to peace and stability.

CEPO is urging President Salva Kiir and opposition leaders to take serious responsibility for making this round of talks succeed without any “dragging of feet or failure”. Yakani stressed that South Sudanese negotiators from both parties must change their attitudes towards making essential compromises to achieve peace and stability.

The Tumaini Peace Talks, which were mediated by Kenya, aim to reach a final agreement on a power-sharing deal between the government and opposition groups. The talks have been ongoing for months, but progress has been slow, with several setbacks along the way.

CEPO’s statement comes as a boost to the peace talks, which are expected to continue in the coming weeks. The regional and international community is watching closely, with many hoping that a lasting peace deal can be reached to end the conflict in South Sudan.
