South Sudanese NGO Founder Writes Open Letter to President Kiir, Urging Action Against Tribalism and Inter-Communal Conflicts

Ms. Rebecca Agau Deng, the founder of Out of Chronic Hatred (OOCH), a national non-governmental organization in South Sudan, has penned an open letter to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, highlighting the pressing issue of tribalism and inter-communal conflicts plaguing the nation.

Deng emphasizes the detrimental effects of these conflicts on families, communities, and the country as a whole, including the inhumane practices of child abductions, cattle raiding, and revenge killings.

She also points out the resulting educational, economic, health, and cultural disparities in the country. Deng calls on President Kiir to investigate these issues and criminalize tribalism, hate speech, cattle raiding, and child abductions.

She suggests adopting Rwanda’s policies of nationalism and patriotism as a way forward and proposes initiatives such as nationalistic sports games and creative activities in schools to promote unity and a sense of national identity.

Deng urges the president to collaborate with organizations like OOCH, the United Nations, and other international bodies to combat tribalism collectively and foster peace in South Sudan.
