Abyei Administrative Area Works with Unity State to Repatriate Over 900 IDPs to Mayom County
In a collaborative effort between the government of Abyei Special Administrative Area, Unity State government, and UNISFA, over nine hundred internally displaced persons (IDPs) were repatriated from Abyei to Mayom County.
The IDPs had sought refuge at the UNISFA compound following clashes between Abyei and Bul Armed Youths.
Upon their arrival in Mayom County, they were warmly received by Governor Dr Joseph Manytuil Wejang and Mayom County Commissioner, Hon. Luka Chierey Riek.
The authorities in Mayom County are providing food, shelter, and land for the settlement and integration of the IDPs into the local community. Efforts are also being made to safely return stranded IDPs in the Amiet and Naham areas of the Abyei Administrative Area.
The IDPs expressed gratitude for the reception and efforts to repatriate them, after spending twenty-two days at the UNISFA camp. Many of them had been displaced in Mayom County and other parts of Unity State due to catastrophic flooding in 2021.
The repatriation of these IDPs is a step towards restoring stability and normalcy in the region, as they are reunited with their communities and begin to rebuild their lives.
