Demanding for Political Tolerance and Respect for Human Rights and Freedoms, the South Sudanese activist Bol Deng Bol has called for the immediate release of his fellow activist, Raphael Juma Zachariah, who was arrested for criticizing the system in a viral video on TikTok and other social media platforms.
According to a statement released by Bol, Raphael was taken into custody at the University of Juba on December 4th and was released on the 21st after being forced to apologize and submit a commitment letter to end his political activism. However, he was rearrested on December 23rd for failing to comply with the demands of the National Security Service (NSS).
Expressing concern over Raphael’s current situation, Bol stated, “He is now in NSS custody, and we don’t know his condition.” Bol further emphasized that the NSS has no right to violate and deny the rights and freedoms of individuals. Criticizing public offices is a fundamental aspect of democracy, and Raphael should not be subjected to arbitrary arrests, detention, and threats.
Bol is now appealing to the President of South Sudan to intervene and ensure the immediate release of Raphael Juma Zachariah from the NSS detention center.
The case of Raphael Juma Zachariah highlights the importance of protecting freedom of speech and expression in South Sudan. As a nation striving for stability and progress, it is crucial to foster an environment where individuals can voice their opinions without fear of retribution.
The international community has also been urged to take note of Raphael’s case and support the call for his release. Human rights organizations and activists have joined Bol Deng Bol in condemning the actions taken against Raphael and demanding justice.
