Barani Edwardo Hiboro Kussala, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese in WES Yambio, has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Catholic Church compound in Tombura

Churches, mosques, hospitals, schools, and embassies are sacred places—meant to be refuges of peace and safety. They should protect the innocent, not become targets of violence. The attack on such a holy site is an affront to humanity and a violation of basic human dignity. I unequivocally condemn this brutal act of aggression.

On the evening of December 10th, 2024, a horrific incident occurred at the St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Parish in Tombura, South Sudan. Armed individuals opened fire indiscriminately into the displaced persons’ camp, tragically resulting in the death of Mr. Undo and severely wounding a woman. This senseless violence is utterly unacceptable.

In the wake of the recent attack on the Catholic Church compound in Tombura, Barani Edwardo Hiboro Kussala, bishop of the Catholic Diocese in WES Yambio, has called on the South Sudanese government to provide immediate protection for vulnerable populations, especially the displaced. The situation in Tombura County has spiralled out of control, making it the government’s duty to restore order and ensure the safety of its citizens.

It is deeply troubling that such tragic events continue to unfold with little response from the government. Where is the President of the Republic of South Sudan? Has he heard the cries of the people of Tombura? After three years of violence in the region, there appears to be a lack of action or concern from the highest office in the land. Is Tombura not part of South Sudan? Shouldn’t the government be responsible for protecting its own people?

On the same day as the attack, Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako and I celebrated Holy Mass at the parish, standing in solidarity with those displaced by the violence. The Cardinal spoke powerfully about the sanctity of human life, emphasising that every individual deserves safety and dignity. Together, we must advocate for peace and protection for all the vulnerable in our communities.
